Location: New York City, NY, USA
Ahhh our last day in New York! As much as I always wish there was more time to explore a city, I feel like we got a lot done here and did the city as well as we could in 6 days. We did have a final few stops today though starting with…
The New York Public Library! Yesss!
I was very excited about it, since years ago I’d seen photos of the Rose Main Reading Room and have wanted to go there ever since. We skipped (quietly) into the hall and gawked at the size of it. Almost as big as a football field. A FOOTBALL FIELD. After taking some photos and slinking around all hush hush we scooted out of there since people were studying and reading everywhere. I would have loved to bring my book and spend more time there, though I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t love it if every tourist did that.

Our last big ticket item for the trip was the Museum of Modern Art, which we planned to be at for a few hours. We started on the 5th floor to see Monet’s Water Lilies and Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ which were as incredible as expected. I stood in front of ‘Starry Night’ for what must have been 10 minutes. It really is gorgeous in person. Again, how did this man not sell any paintings when he was alive?!

We made our way down to the 4th floor, and that’s when things started to get weird. In one room there was a shovel hanging from the ceiling and people were gawking at it like it was the most amazing thing they’d ever seen. In another there were weird moaning sounds and a video of a hand organizing diamonds, while a shaky video of a set of mountains played on loop perpendicular to it. Cool coo coo coo coo cool.
There was this GIANT 18 meter by 8 meter red canvas with 5 vertical lines painted on it, and it was described as, and I quote “a new way of life” COOL COOL OK COOL. I started to wonder how I was ever going to be able to appreciate modern art after I walked into a room, realized it was under construction, walked out, and then realized that THAT WAS THE EXHIBIT. (throws hands up in the air).

A few floors later we had had enough, and found out Warhol’s ‘Tomato Soup’ and collection was off on a road trip so that’s all the convincing we needed, We grabbed some Xian’s Famous Food Noodles for lunch, then New York cheesecake on Broadway and were about to head back out when I got an e-mail that our flight for tomorrow night was cancelled due to thunderstorms.
We rushed back to the apartment, called air Canada and they put us on a flight for tomorrow night instead of first thing in the morning. Here’s hoping that all goes well. Guess we get a bonus day!
We hung around the apartment for awhile, then ventured out for some dinner to The Crooked Knife, as recommended by Gordy. We got some New York Steaks thanks to Katisse’s boyfriend Matt who said we should have dinner on him one night! However one thing we’ve noticed this trip, is that we really should share everything. Portions. are. giant. We each ended up with a 16 oz. steak and big bowls of fries and mounds of mashed potatoes.
Vegetables?
This is America.
We ran home as thunder clapped and rain poured down so hard we were completely soaked in one block, laughing and crashing through the doors to our apartment for our last night in New York.

P.S. as we got home, we got TORNADO warnings for New York… fingers crossed we can catch our flight tomorrow night! Nothing will keep up from Taylor Swift.
