Location: Split, Croatia
Meaghan: Today begins and ends with a ferry. We enjoyed our last sleep at Luka’s House then headed off for Split via ferry, all very excited about our plans for the day – a road trip to Krka! Amanda and her friends had told us how easy it was to rent a car and drive over to Krka, and we thought this was a grand idea. Split (haha) between the three of us, renting a car was much cheaper than a tour and we could come and go at our own times. Maddie drove, Savanna navigated, and I occasionally corrected these navigations (with gems like “other left!” and “wrong lane!”). We sang some songs, danced some dances and made it to Krka in no time.
Sav: She’s not even joking about those gems, those were real quotes from today. Worry not, parents! We are adulting well. Once we arrived at Krka National Park we were greeted with the news that due to high water levels, we would not be allowed to swim. Saddened but not any less excited for the view we set off into the forest. After a few km walk, Meaghan finally noticed there were these beautiful pink flowers everywhere and stopped to take a look… Though I’m not sure what she had been looking at up to that point because they were everywhere all the way along the path! We had a good laugh at her observational skills. This woman.

We made it to the falls and ooh’d and ahh’d and took a whole lot of pictures we are very proud of. Though I came close to falling off the railing of the bridge at one point when a bee came near me… Luckily the water was not far down if I had actually fallen! Also luckily Meaghan and Maddie missed that little incident, which left a great rosy colour in my cheeks for subsequent photos.

M: It was really beautiful. At one look out point close to the falls, we could feel the mist on our faces. It was so refreshing. Savanna even commented that this place smells like a national park, and she was right! It smelled like green leaves, clean water and fresh air. We will have to come back again for a swim one day, because it would have been amazing to swim in the turquoise waterfall.

After a hike around the waterfall, we had to head back to Split to catch our ferry. This return trip involved much less backseat navigation correction from me, thankfully. All jokes aside, it was a great drive and the inland terrain in Croatia is different than I expected. We trained from Zagreb to Split overnight so we hadn’t seen the countryside before. It was all rocky with shrubs and a ton of windmills. Maybe it is just the area we were driving through, but the towns were pretty few and far between.
S: It was very hard to part with Maddie, I got all teary-eyed and she goes “HEY! You don’t have permission to do that yet!” At which point I laughed and cried a little harder. We hung out by the water and ate boxed noodles all together until it was time to leave for real. We gave a round of tight hugs and and had a few more laughs before Meaghan and I found our way onto the ferry, though not before almost boarding the wrong one…
Yes. Adults.
