When You Wish Upon a Star

Location: Hvar, Croatia

Sav: We woke up this morning expecting a day of rain and thunderstorms, and instead were greeted with a few happy clouds but mostly a beautiful sunny day. One thing we hadn’t done in Split that we really wanted to do was grab Luca’s gelato, and since we were running out of time we decided what better time to have it than a hot sunny morning for breakfast?

Turns out?
Great idea.

Everyday this man makes homemade gelato in a bunch of really interesting flavours, so we sat back and enjoyed our sweet breakfast.

Meag: This is the best gelato I have ever eaten. We tried so many of the flavours, and every one had an unexpected twist that brought the taste to a whole new level. I had chocolate orange with Nutella cookie. If I lived here I would weigh 500 lbs because I would eat it every. Single. Day.

S: One thing we’ve noticed in all our relaxation here in Croatia is that there are cats everywhere. Like not just a few cats. Cats ABOUND. And this morning’s breakfast was no exception. There were furry friends slinking all around our chairs and lounging in the trees and parked in masses in the garden across from Luca’s.

M: As we have every other day here in Split, we went over to the market. But we had a mission this time – make some amazing trail mix for the ferry to Hvar. The almonds, cashews and dried cranberries are SO GOOD. And together? We were in trail mix heaven.

The ferry ride was very uneventful, mostly because we all passed out really quickly. The waves rocked us to sleep and we arrived in Hvar in no time. We were promised a picturesque seaside town, and boy did Hvar deliver. The white buildings, purple flowers and crooked streets are beautiful. There are lots of stray cats wandering and meowing all over the place. If I was to come back as a cat, this would be the place.

We made our way to the hostel up the hill and through the winding streets. Our hostel, Luka’s Lodge, is so inviting. Luka was out when we arrived, but Eva promised that she and Luka would call around for us tomorrow to organize whatever we wanted to do.

By this time we were ready to eat each other alive, not having eaten a meal since our super-nutritious gelato breakfast.

S: We hurriedly found the closest place we could, which happily turned out to include pizza. We have eaten so much pizza I’m surprised (but only mildly) that we haven’t gotten sick of it yet. We ate merrily and watched the sun go down over the expanse of crystal blue ocean, while the bells tolled and storm clouds rolled in.

We expected to get rained out, and were we ever in for the opposite surprise. The clouds lazily passed by with a few threatening drops and nothing else, so we decided to take full advantage of the beautifully warm night and go stargazing. We grabbed a couple of beers from the market and marched off into the night, intent on finding the perfect place. After a few rocky corners and a whole lot of laughing, we found our way to a stone dock and turned our gazes upwards.

M: We spent the next few hours sitting on a little dock overlooking Hvar in one direction and the wide open sea in the other. Above us, the sky was full of stars and out in the distance lightening was crashing down. We sat there listening to the waves roll in and swapping stories. All of the sudden, the moon came up over the hills faster than I have ever seen. We could see the progress it was making across the sky unbelievably fast. Eventually we got cold and made our way back to the comfiest hostel beds yet.
