The Best Wurstcroissant

Location: Prague, Czech Republic

Sav: We started the day off with a wurstcroissant from the train station and made our way through the maze of trains to meet Matt, Farzin, Carla and Tobi at the East Side Gallery. This gallery is really just a collection of paintings on a still standing 1 kilometre long section of the Berlin Wall. It was staggering to see the size of the wall, and the art was all controversial and imbued with political and social messages. It was intense to say the least. We spent about an hour walking around and then promptly decided to leave. It was great to see, but an odd feeling creeps into your bones a bit when you consider what this wall once represented.

Meag: Afterwards, we went to this cute little burger place nearby that used to be a public bathroom under a train track called “Burgermeister.” I had a bite of Savanna’s burger and can say for sure it was good. So good that she ate the entire thing despite not being hungry, right Savanna?

S: Yes… Yes that did happen. I really didn’t need to eat but it seemed wrong not to somehow…. Those burgers man they call your name or something. After this we all said our goodbyes and Meaghan and I walked over to Alexanderplatz where we went to the top of the Park Inn hotel to get a good view of Berlin. We were given good advice that it was almost as high as the TV tower and way way cheaper. It was awesome to see the view, I didn’t really expect the city to be so sprawling. But the best part about the whole thing was there were people doing harnessed falls off the edge…. And I look over at Meaghan whose jaw is basically unhinged and she’s pointing over to the jumpers like she just witnessed something magical instead. But she’s frozen in this position staring at me like ‘please for the love of god explain to me why this is happening.’

M: Seriously though, WHY? I do not understand humans sometimes. We watched a couple more people fall off up top then went back down to ground level and watched a few more… because I could not look away. Watching from the ground you can really tell how long they fall for. The drop zone ride at Oktoberfest was certainly enough for me.

As much as we don’t understand German, we at least get the gist of what the train announcements are saying. This COMPLETELY ended when we crossed in to the Czech Republic this afternoon and heard the first announcement in Czech. We turned to each other with nervous looks then immediately started laughing. Every time the announcements came on the train after this we giggled to ourselves. We just had ZERO idea what was happening.

When we arrived in Prague, Savanna was somehow the one in charge of the directions (S: how did this happen?!) to get to the hostel. On the way we looked at a few buildings and statues, which is just making me even more excited for tomorrow. She led the way and miraculously got us to where we needed to go in a very reasonable amount of time. Maybe Savanna will be the Pigeom in Prague.

S: She just had a momentary lapse in judgement where she let me take the reigns. We made it to our hostel ‘Advantage Hostel’ and joined the kitchen crew for some homemade mulled wine. After a short chat we set off to find food and ended up at this little old nondescript bar a couple of blocks away. It seems like it should have had regular old food but NO it was totally out of this world. Meaghan literally pointed to something random on the menu which ended up being pork tenderloin and I ended up with a cream chicken and I kid you not it was in the top 3 best meals we’ve had on this trip. In my opinion. It was pretty nice that a beer only costs $1.5 CAD too… Can’t complain.

Now we’re sitting in the kitchen eating a Czech chocolate bar, sleepy but excited to begin our adventures in Prague tomorrow. After a real sleep of course….
