What a Wonderful World

Location: Dresden, Saxony, Germany

Sav: Today was mostly a travel day so not a ton to report. We woke up and headed to the train station, and we had to catch 4 trains over 6 hours to make it to Dresden. We caught up on our journals, finished a movie and played crib while reminiscing over yesterday’s Oktoberfest adventures and shenanigans.

We finally made it to Dresden and to our Hostel, The Kangaroo-Stop, and after having been here for about 2 minutes my friend Matt from university showed up to meet us! It’s been a few years since we’ve seen each other it was wonderful to be able to catch up and see him in person again.

Meag: When we were looking for Matt at the train station and Savanna told me to keep my eyes out for a tall guy with brown hair and a giant smile…this is a very accurate description of Matt. Great big, warm smile. Once we chatted with Matt a bit we headed out for dinner at a Turkish place then we wandered around the old city. Matt filled us in on some history as we walked about.

S: Everything was so beautiful and there was a lot to see, even at night. My favourite part was this one street where an accordionist played while a woman sang an opera version of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’. The massive walls along the street were plated in gold and so beautiful. I’ve never seen a giant wall plated in gold before… it is still sinking in that people build things like that just for the beauty of it.

M: It was gorgeous. There were lights set up playing on the buildings by the river. We walked through some gardens then ate some ice cream – which I kind of ordered in German (thanks, Matt). I believe kugel is scoop. My German needs a lot of work but I have the most important word figured out!
